Default 1977 curious dash bracket

ok got a 1977 L48 was orginally corvette orange was changed to black. The person i bought it off of lets just say it was less then a half-assed job. i drove it for a few years then had some Q-Jet issues so it sat outside so we all know that weather and fiberglass don't mix well so the paint became a blistering mess. well its being redone and done right now. when i removed the dash there was this curious bracket that really seems to go no where or in the area to attatch to anything if anyone can tell me where it goes or what its for many thanks. included is a pic of the bracket and what it looked like before i started stripping it.

I addded the pinstrip thought it went well with the curves.

It is upside down - and attaches to the dash pad to hold it in place.

well thats the way it was behind the dash ok so if it attaches to the dash pad curious where at and with the dash pad in it doesn't seem to get close to it and theres no mounting spots it seems on th ebottum of the dash pad.

Should have a raised spot on the underside of pad where the brace matches up to and fastens. Does on my original 77 pad--should be there--

The pic is not clear but if that bracket is attached to the dash pad its up side down. The long leg attaches to the pad, short leg goes forward towards firewall.
