As far as electrical connections it is like the original except there is no terminal for the coil boost wire if you have a pre-HEI.

I dont know much about how to pick out the smaller, faster, neater, cooler, gear reduction starter but I do know that mine heat soaks badly in my BB. How do I go about finding the DELCO one that doesnt need a any shimming?

That's very similar to the one I used.
Didn't need a shim with my 69 SB.
Install it, pull the power from the coil so the car won't start, and trip the starter while you're under the car so you can see how the gear engages...
