Default 72' engine rebuild

I have a 72' with 198,000 miles on its low compression 350ci. I am interested in having it rebuilt and I'm wondering how much it will set me back. Also, I will take any suggestions on mild modifications that will give a bit more hp. I already have a edelbrock 650 and intake manifold. Thank you!

It won't cost any more than any other 350 to rebuild. The cost is going to depend on the shop you use. If you have the original engine and they recommend decking the block DO NOT let them do it unless you are standing next to the machinist when he does it. There have been too many stories of the pad numbers getting machined off by shops that don't realize the importance of leaving the pad alone.

An alternative that probably wouldn't cost any more than rebuilding the original engine is buying an inexpensive crate motor. Most crate motors have more HP than the stock 72 engine and your intake and carb would work well with them.

Here's the one I'd recommend and you wouldn't even have to use your carb. http://sdparts.com/details/gm-factor...parts/19201990

Wow..That's a $22,900 supercharged 6.2L V8..I was thinking around $2000 for a simple rebuild with maybe a ported and polished intake.

I'll second the idea of putting in a crate motor and then storing your original.

But, if you really want to use the original, then some mild performance improvements would include a hotter cam, better heads (but save the originals), better intake manifold (which apparently you already have), and headers.

While the engine is out, make sure to evaluate the radiator - if it's the original and hasn't been touched, then it's probably ready for a recore or just replace it with a DeWitt's (and don't forget to replace the foam seals around the radiator).

I think the link provided is just the beginning page because we all have to look at that lovely ZR1 engine just to see how much it is.

Try this one:

How about the Year One crate engine that everyone talks about for around $3100 shipped and 400 HP?

The people on the forum that have this engine seem to love it. 400HP all roller engine for $3100 is not bad at all.
