Hi everyone,
I'd like to upgrade my older 63amp alternator to something with more power and a more chrome/polished look. I've upgraded several things electrical over the past few years and I need to bump up but I'm not sure how high to go (100amp? 140amp?). I am currently running the following in addtion to or in replacement of stock components: MSD-6AL directly from battery, 1000W sub amp directly from battery, 500W kick panel speaker amp directly from battery, dual spal fans on my DeWitts. Does anyone have a recommendation on how much amperage I should get in an alternator? My current alternator is a 2 wire configuration. Stock look is not important (or prefereable really) and neither is 1 wire vs 2 wire as long as it does the job. I think I want the internal regulator?
While I did pay my builder for a powermaster 140 and it took a dump in less than 2 months that could be the builders fault...( another thread )
So when it took a dump I had in my junk a 108 amp stock alt my dad pulled from the junkyard about 20 years ago...what the heck I installed it after a quick reclock and it has been working flawless and that is even with the high end taurus fans I have,
If the shop will stand behind the 140 I will put it back on but this 108 was a cheap out for now and food for thought....
Junkyard CS140 went on my old camper van project last fall yet....been fine, my vette has a 17SI on it the 108 amp rated larger diameter unit like Batty has....been find, went through two AZ exchanges with it, but this 3rd unit has been fine for some years now....
I went with a chrome CS130. It's about the same size and weight of the original alternator and about double the charging capacity. I run electric fans, electric water pump, MSD, and high power headlights. It works great. I almost went with the CS144, but that sucker is huge.
