Default Dip Stick Height

Can anyone tell me how high their dip stick sits? This is in my 81, I bought a new stick & tube but the tube sticks up higher than the hood! It says for 80-82 small block. I will cut it but not sure how hight it should be. I have it in the block up the the rib, thanks.

80-82 all used the same dip stick, but 82 used a different tube.

The tube appears to be about 10" long and curves forward toward the front of the engine. The tube ends about even with the top of the exhaust manifold. The original dipstick is about 25" long overall and the measuring part, less handle, is about 25 1/2" long. Obviously, the handle extends past the tube about 2 1/2", but because it is angled forward, it doesn't stick up any higher than the valve cover.

The original dip stick was discountinued by GM some time ago, while the tube was available up untill recently. The OEM dip stick was part # 14026165 and the tube was 14026101. I'm not aware of any correct replacement or repro that's currently available.

Below is a picture of the original dip stick and it's placement in my 81.
