Default 5-speed conversion from Auto...???

Folks - I'm a new member and am in the market for a C3 driver ('70 - 74') and orginality is not the priority. I have been looking around quite a bit and have decided that if a car came with a Tremec 5-speed, that would be kind of nice - better range of gears for performance and/or milage.

Additionally, I'm discovering that an Auto car can be retrofitted with the Tremec as well. Yes - originality would be absolutely kaput on the auto-manual conversion. But the conversion is pretty sanitary.

Anybody ever done one of the auto-to-manual conversions? I read the story of one on another Covette website and it did not seem like an oppressive DIY. And yes, I have talked to the good folks at Keisler. Thoughts???

Thanks in advance for a terrific forum!

I put a Tremic in my 4sp car and what an improvement! But if it had been an automatic it would have been a lot easier to install the Tremic. The cross member unbolts to allow the automatic to be removed-not so with the 4sp car.

I converted from auto to a 5spd. The hardest part was putting in the new pedal assembly. The conversion came with everything you would need.

Im hoping to do the switch next summer. My car was actually a manual from the factory and someone switched it to auto. When they did it they just hack sawed the pedals off and left all the linkage in place lol

I have given serious thought to doing this as well. I may still one day. I dont know, just having a hard time swallowing the cost involved. The kit I was looking at was between 5k to 6k. My argument with myself came down to this: all things being equal I would love a 5 speed, but for me my Vette is a toy. I have a reasonable daily driver that gets good mileage, has frosty ac, and a nice stereo. I did not buy the Vette for these qualities, I bought it for a fun car and thats what it is. Don't take me the wrong way, if Santa came along and said, Dude, Im gonna hook your Vette up with a 5 speed, I would be all grins. I dont have it, so I dont know the true value of having done it, but for me now, for that much cash, I have other things I want to do with the car first.
