Just bought a new set of alum valve covers but only 1 has a hole for a vent. Do both sides need to be vented.I would have to drill a hole and would rather not if I don't have to
I disagree, You should be running a PCV, that requires 2 holes.
Also you need baffling in the valve cover or you will see high oil consumption as the PCV sucks the oil out of the engine

Unless this is strictly a drag car...
I prefer a properly functioning PCV system. One side is filtered air from the air cleaner (passenger side) into the crankcase and the other (driver's side) is crankcase fumes back into a vacuum port on the carb through the PCV valve.
[IMG][/IMG]I installed new valve covers set up like Paul's diagram. PCV on the driver's side, breather vent on the passenger side. You can buy those snap in vents at any parts house. When I change the oil, I just pull the PCV out and add new oil through that hole. You can buy different size rubber grommets at the parts house. I'm assuming your valve covers have only one hole in each cover, versus the stock covers that have two holes in one cover and one in the other.
Are these repor's or older originals.? I'm surprised there's no provision for the PVC or air cleaner connection on one of them. Which one has no hole? Oil cap side or the other?
The drivers side has a rubber fill hole and grommet,I guess for the pcv. passenger side is blank. Corvette is cast into the covers, but don't really knw about the origin. There are no baffels in either cover

If they have CORVETTE cast into the covers, sounds like the mid year style originals. These small blocks had the oil filler/breather tube as a stack pipe on the front of the intake, thus did not need another hole in the other valve cover. If they are not originals, sounds like the application was the same.
You can put a hole and grommet in the solid cover and as stated above, get the breather from your local parts store. Most of them are baffled internally and will not need the additional baffle under the cover.
