Another option assuming you have your stock hood is buy the L-88 scoop from Eckler's (at least that's where I got mine) and find someone who knows what they're doing with fiberglass. I had a guy cut the proper "hole" in my stock hood (yes that might have been the scariest moment spent with my vette) and he grafted the scoop onto it, smoothed, etc. Looked awesome when I got it back. Not only did I save a bunch of money, but I have my original hood that already fits and doesn't need to be shaved down, shimmed, etc. to make it fit.
I bought a Vanacor hood years ago for my 72. It was much lighter than my stock BB hood and could easily be flexed when mounted on the car. The car was stripped of paint (unfortunately it still is) so I was more than willing to work the surrounding area to get an acceptable fit. The problem was that specific hood didn't fit worth a crap on my car. The folks were nice enough to exchange the hood for another. Same deal I'm afraid. They refunded my money without a problem. I then ordered an Ecklers hood. The hood fit was much better (still needed work) and had the heft and rigidity of my stock hood. They're both hand laid fiberglass but the Ecklers unit is definitely a higher quality piece. Guess that's why it costs more.
I can definitely hook you up with a high quality fiberglass L-88 hood.

Tons of great info. I like the idea of modifying a stock hood however I may think about the ACI option. I remember that company well as I lived very near to them back in the 80's and recall that they were a first class outfit. If this is the same place (and I'm pretty sure it is) they replaced a brake light switch for me on a '68 roadster years ago. They were able to do it very quickly without removing anything to get to it. I remember the guy joking that he had an orangutan in the shop that could reach those. LOL. Thanks to all for your help.
Before ordering from Ecklers make sure you call and ask if it is in stock and get a date for delivery. I ordered parts from them and 6 weeks later half still did not arrive. Their excuse was that I ordered online and couldnt have told me the parts were out of stock???
