ok i just bought a 77 the previous owner said engine has aprox 10,000 miles and 350HP I'm not seeing it what are the stock gears in the 77also what would a good gear be to run mostly around town but i still drive hwy its a automatic and how big of a job is it to change out gears your opions please
both the 77 manual and auto had the 3.36 to 1 . i think if you have a torquey motor those gears are fine for a decent launch and suitable on the hiway. if you feel they just arent giving you enogh punch go to 3.55 and 3.73 at the most since you do hiway driving. its quite a simple and cheap swap for a diff shop but not for a first timer.
Most likely your rear gear is 3.08. Changing the ring and pinion isn't simple or cheap. After you remove the diff from the car, specialized tools are required and a lot of experience to get the gears set up correctly.
I agree, you need to know what you are doing I sent mine out and had a 3:54 put in. Good time to do a complete rebuild change seals and clutch pack etc....
Check the bottom of the differential; there's a code on it for the original gear set installed. As long as it hasn't been swapped, that's what's probably still in it.
