Default Steering Column Parts Expanded View?

Hello and thanks for looking.

I'm currently doing a steering column swap. I'm taking a 75' tele/tilt column from my parts car and swapping it into my 72' driver which was/is a basic column. No reason for the change other than wanted a tele/tilt and had one to use.

I have a few questions that hopefully others can help with.

1. Anyone have a full break out view of a 75 steering column? I believe I need to do a little work to it as the bearings sound a little rough and the bottom bearing has some slop. Would like to take it apart but want to have some sort of reference to go by.

2. I'm changing the color from tan to black. I'm planning to use satin black from a rattle can. Old paint isn't flaking, would you sand it down anyway and repaint or just paint over what's there? Any opinions?

I'm looking forward to getting this back on the road as it's been far too long sitting in the garage.

Thanks for the help!

The bottom bearing definitly replace. I have done a few columns and would not put one back togther with an old bearing. As for the paint if it is in good condition you can go over it. If it is flaking or coming off strip it and repaint it. Sorry no exploded views but Jim Sheas papers have some good views.

Thanks, I had done some searches but hadn't turned up an actual diagram of the column. I searched for the "Jim Shea" papers and did finally find the link to them all.....WOW! Great information and a ton of reading!!

In case others are in search of a wide variety of information the link is: http://jimshea.corvettefaq.com/?page_id=4

@Gordonm,
Were you saying that you would replace all the bearings or just the lower bearing. It doesn't seem like the upper bearings are bad/loose or rough and was just planning to do the lower bearing.

Thanks for the help!

I have never had to replace the uppr bearing. Just clean and relube. The lower one is out in the elements and takes a lot of abuse and has some rust problems. I usually have to cut the inner race off the shaft.

You guys seem to be getting along just fine without me. I am in Europe for the next couple weeks for the wedding of my youngest son. We are in Rome at the moment.

I am not sure how often that I will have time for the internet. Also, as you can imagine, I have no reference materials with me. However, my papers at www.corvettefaq.com are always available.

Thanks! Would be fun to see Europe at some point, hopefully you'll find some time after the wedding to check things out. Would be a shame not to!

Got the column pulled apart today and have started on the cleaning. As I thought the bottom bearing was SHOT and the upper still looks good.

If I can get my parts list together tonight hopefully I'll have it completed next week and in the car! (And with power steering too!)

I'll get some photos posted shortly.
