Argggg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! heard a noise in the rear end of the car jacked up the wheels and sure enough either one or both of my clips are off. the axel(yea half shafts) moves back and forth not a direction it has ever taken before.
Can just the clip go bad ??
Pulling the cover this weekend .
Glad I checked that little noise out!!!!
it would make the noise on a sharp turn.

There's a good chance you'll need to change the spindles. The clips usually let go because of wear of the inside end of the spindle over time.

check to see if you bump stops on your t-arms are bent down... in sharp corners/inclines the half shaft/ujoint knuckle will catch the bent bump stop and sound like a quick chatter/clicking

Use snap ring pliers to remove the snap rings off the yoke ends. Then remove the yoke install the rings back on and measure from the face to the ring. If they are in the .180-.187 range they are still good.

You may also want to check and make sure that the carrier hasn't gone "egg shaped" where the shaft that holds the spider gears passes through it.

My wife had a couple of C-3s before we were married, and one of them had developed a "clunk" in the rear end. I immediately assumed it was the u-joints, so I replaced them first. While doing that, I discovered that the rubber bushing that is on the "nose" of the differential was shot, and there was room for movement. Replaced that also, and thought I had it licked. Wrong!

After further investigation, I found that the inner ends of the yokes had worn away, as frequently happens. After the yokes wear, and excessive play develops, the yokes then "hammer" that shaft that I previously mentioned. That, in turn, beat up the carrier, and I had to replace that too.

I would say yes. If the ends are worn down to the clip grooves they have to be replaced. There's a corvette shop near me and one time I stopped there and the owner showed me several yolks that had the end 5/16ths worn away including the clip!
