Default Need Help with 69 D/S dash panel

I am having trouble getting the D/S dash panel pushed back enough to get the shifter console mounted correctly. When I attempt to get everything in position the center gauge console pushes out at the top. I am concerned about forcing pieces into place and breaking something. I bought this car nearly 100% disassembled and am unsure of the harness routing behind the speedo and tach. It also appears the tach cable is hitting the cast bracket that supports the steering column. The dash panel is off of a later model...71 maybe... with the double row of threads...cosmetically it is not correct but thought it was correct physically? Could I have a center gauge console that is incorrect with the front edge studs too far forward? suggestions?

Gary,

Thanks for the pictures. I see from your pics that my harness needs repositioned. Do you know if the tach cable routes over or under the cast steering column support?

I put the shift console and the center bezel in before the D/S dash on my 69. Also the wiring harness on a 69 goes below the tach and speedo not above as in Duke94's 71. I put a yellow arrow on the Speedo cable which I believe goes between the two supports and also an arrow on the wire harness that is just above the steering column.

There are wire harness clip on both the tach and speedo that hold the wiring harness before and after it goes over the steering column. I also put arrows on these.

Here's how the speedo/tach cables were routed when I took it apart.

Great Pictures Duke!

The wire harness over the gauges vs. behind them always has been a problem.

This is an old posting. Just wanted to say the routing of the wiring harness changed in early 1970. I have an AIM for 70 with a revision note about this change. My copy of the AIM shows the harness going over the speedo and tach. The AIM shown in this thread is an earlier revision which shows it going behind. My 70 was built March 3, 1970. The harness goes behind, not long enough to make the loop over.
