Not a good day, Finally hooked the battery up to the new engine and hit the key...click click click.....
engine turns maybe 1/4 inch with each key turn. Seems the engine is too tight......arrgghhhhh
When I assembled it, It turned fairly freely with breaker bar up til I put the heads on. Then it became much harder. I assumed it was the compression and a new engine and would turn more freely with the starter once in the vehicle....wrong. Its very tight trying to turn with breaker bar now with plugs in.
I can take all the plugs out and it turns pretty much ok, with starter but once I put couple plugs back in....no go.
btw...its a stock 82
Im gonna take starter off and take it to autozone and have it tested, but it looks like engine is coming back out.
Any other ideas?

If the engine rotates with the plugs out but does not when they are in, then something in the valve timing doesn't seem right. Did you rebuild the engine? Years ago I changed my timing chain and gears and made sure to align the dots:
Your problem sounds like something is way off. Hopefully some experts will jump in here soon. Don't pull that motor yet, relax and have a few extra beers.
Did you install the lifters dry... straight from the box? If so, they are not "pumped up" and possibly waaayyyy too tight if adjusted dry. I always soak my new lifters in clean oil for a bit before I install, then only set the valves for real after the engine has run a bit and I'm certain the lifters are pumped up. I have a procedure written down somewhere for a ballpark setting used during cam break in... can't find it for the life of me right now.
Do you have the battery in the car like it belongs? Are you using jumper cables? I had the exact same problem last Saturday. New crate motor engine just turned half a rotation and then nothing. Turns out I was using jumper cables and they got HOT. When I put the battery directly in the car she started in 20 seconds.
Still not sure what I did, but im sure I had it set right first time...
Its all a blur now. I pulled it down, reset timing chain, put a known good/stong battery (got rid of jumper cables and battery charger) in the car and hit the switch....
