Default temp gauge question

A quick silly question about temp gauges. I took my 72 out for a drive today. The temp gauge started at below the line like normal. It was 100 out driving and after an hour of stop and go traffic and some highway it was hovering just over the 1/4 line so I was relatively happy with how cool it was running in that heat. Figuring it was Friday the 13th and all I began to think it was running TOO stable and remembered to look at the gauge when I turned it off. The gauge stayed at the 1/4 mark with they key off. Is that normal or should it go back to zero with the ignition off. I cant go look because it was driven to my storage unit for a few months while I move to FL and if I dont get an answer its going to bother me until I go all the way back out there to check.

It should return to zero when you turn the key on again with the engine cold.
Zero with key off, temp with on.

So as soon as I turned the key off it should have went back to zero huh. Thats just great. Since the engine was still hot I did pull the temp gauge wire and touch it to the block and the gauge pegged out so I know its not stuck. I wonder why it didnt go back to zero when I turned the key off.

That's normal , the needle will stay at the temp the engine was when you killed the power to the gauge.
If you go back later and turn the key on the needle will go to the present temperature.

When you turn the key off, the temp gauge stay at its last position. When you turn the key on (without starting the engine), the temp gauge will go to zero if the car is cold.

Fuel, tach, oil (electric), and temp all work this way.
