Permatex gasket sealer and a piece of cardboard would last for years.
I put on An Advance Auto Parts one 2yrs. ago getting ready to do it again (yolks) I wold say just take you time and dont over use the sealer.

There's nothing wrong with using a gasket, thats the way they put it together. No gasket cost less, no trip to the store, and it's also trouble free. You have to put sealant on the gasket anyways right?! Either way works.
I've sealed differentials with kite string and #2 Permatex. Loosen the bolts, slip the 3rd member forward, goop the string with the Permatex, wrap it around the bolts a couple of times, and bolt it back together.
In all fairness, the ring gear diameter was really close to 14 inches.
