Default POR 15 Questions

Prep questions:

I was going to wire wheel the metal parts as best I can then wash them is some tsp, let dry then apply one coat of POR 15. I have the metal ready stuff but don't have enough of it so I figured I'd just got the route of using tsp.

Paint questions:

I was thinking of using a 4" thin roller for most of the parts then brush the rest from the small roller try I'm using. I would just pour enough into the tray that I figured I'd use then seal up the POR 15 can again.

After POR 15 application:

Once dry I've heard that some apply a coat of paint, (any color) for effect or due to rumours that POR 15 is effected by UV rays. If a coat of paint is applied after POR 15 application, is the surface lightly sanded then painted or just painted after intial coat is dry?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Go to the POR 15 website for instructions on top coating POR 15. They give instructions for using normal paint and they also have their own products that interface between POR 15 and paint.

I've used POR 15 without their etching coat and with it. I've had one ot two failures without it and none with it. If you done have enough of theirs, use OSPHRO or similar to etch. Always be sure to rinse well to neutralize the acid.

There's a two-part process with certain cleaning and prepping solutions that are recommended. Google POR-15 and you'll find the answer. I have used POR-15 directly on clean surfaces and it sticks tenaciously. Be advised taht glass beading will not remove POR-15. Once it's cured - it ain't coming off.

If you haven't already bought the POR check out RustBullet.com

POR is more well-known due to their advertising but IMO RustBullet needs much less prep work and can be topcoated with any kind of paint.

Don't wait for the POR15 to dry completey, once tacky mist a coat of whatever color you want to use then once dry and additional coats of your color. If you wait until completey dry the color won't stay on, also don't get to aggresive getting the rust of POR15 doesn't like clean metal I've seen it peel off in sheets from extremely clean metal.

After POR 15 application:

Once dry I've heard that some apply a coat of paint, (any color) for effect or due to rumours that POR 15 is effected by UV rays.

This is very true!!! I tried it on a basket ball hoop stand. Preped and painted the metal support tubes/pipes. Looked great for a while, but after a month or two, the painted started to become powdery. Would be hard to wash off hands also. Lesson Learned: Top coat it!

Some things I have learned using the stuff. Buy inexpensive small paint brushes @ Lowes or Home Depot; the 1 inch size. Great for painting small parts. To extend life of brush, stick in plastic bag. Should last another day before getting hard.

Better to mix a small batch than too much -- can't put back in can. Wear gloves!!! Cut up some hangers so you can suspend your parts for drying. Curve ends of hangers so you don't poke you eye out!!

Buy the small cans -- the tops get beat up quickly from sticking to the can. Always, separate the lid from the can with a piece of plastic -- like saran wrap or even the plastic bags from Walmart, Lowes etc.

Personally, I'm not a fan of having top coat to protect from UV rays. When I find a similar product that doesn't have the UV issue, I'll switch.

My prep is bead blasting and the etching. Haven't had any peeling paint.

Good Luck

I normally sandblast or wire wheel my stuff to get a majority of the rust off. After that I just use a degreaser and the metal ready. Not sure about tsp since I have never used it before. When I go to paint I have been using little 1 inch foam brushes and put on at least two coats. I buy the Por-15 in the 6 packs so I have little cans that stay fresh longer. For topcoats as mentioned wait until it is tacky and almost dry and then spray a top coat on it. If you have parts that do not need a top coat leave them with just the Por-15.

I can personally attest to the quality of the paint as I did the inside of my doors on the 71. The car went through Katrina down in New Orleans and the doors and Por-15 still look as good as when I put it on the car.
