Default Blower Motor Replacement

I've got the blower motor out of the AC box and the replacement with the larger squirrel cage ready to install. From what I've read on this forum, I need a 3/4" spacer to install the motor with the larger fan attached.

But mine shows a lot more than 3/4" difference in height from the plane of the firewall to the bottom of the fan. So the question is, does this space need to be accounted for? Should I make a spacer that's a full inch thick?

Also the hole for the blower motor vent tube that goes into the AC box...it's in a different position with this new motor. What do ya do about that?

Re: the vent tube for the blower: If I line up the flat sides of the fan flanges, (there are two on the new one) the vent tube hole is 90* off one way, and 180* off the other way.

Paul. Can the motor position be changed on the flange? I would allow about 1/4 inch clearance to back of blower enclosure. What ever the spacer needs to be for that clearance. mike...

Thanks Man I appreciate the input and I agree with the 1/4" assessment. It would be great if there was an easy way to measure this!

I think you have it in your pic.. Measure the differance between the two mounting plates and go with that. Does the motor bolt to the plate? If so you may be able to rotate the plate in relation to the cooling hole opening to get it to line up. If permanetly pinned to plate than that is a bigger problem. mike...

the extra 1/4 inch is prolly lost in the housing...the original blower prolly had at least a 1/2 clearance... just guessing here... i installed a biger blower a long time ago and i dont think i spaced it a full 3/4... i used rubber gaskets, actually i cut my own from gasket material from a plumbing suppy house..

The upgrade fan motor I purchased from Willcox had a hose "fitting" attached - I believe 5/8" in diameter and about 1" in length. I could not reuse my old damaged rubber vent hose so I used a piece of flex hose to connect to the AC/Heater box.

The motor is riveted to the flange, and that's prob a good thing to keep it from vibrating loose. I may go to another parts house & compare brands on these things before doing the final install. I'm dying to drive the car though - it's a perfect-weather-week here in San Diego and I don't wanna drive her with a big hole in the firewall ....
