I had replaced the entire exhaust several years ago to a louder, throatier version....and I'm quite over it now....Is it possible to make a '72 sound somewhat as quiet as a new vehicle without replacing the entire system? Has anyone quieted their exhaust noise? I know that you guys like to hear it, but is it possible?
What all did You change? You might get lucky and be able to change mufflers. But if You put big headers on and any engine mods, You may have to replace entire exhaust? I went through this with My 70 Z28. I changed everything but headers and it would drowned out cars with open headers everywhere I went.

Not being funny but Im sure some younger guy will swap Ya for his quite Exhaust.
The mufflers are the most noise. you could go back to the stock muffler.
There is nothing like the throaty sound of a performance exhaust! Except when you go for extended drives. They noise can be a nuisance on long drives. It is your baby, do what makes you comfortable and happy!
I had the same noise problems with my 81 when I first went to true duals, I love it for awhile and then it was a pain. I changed my mufflers to the stock versions and I could not be happier. Still has the front rumble from the headers but interior noise is very comfortable...Tim
A few months ago I changed out headers and got rid of the 2" exhaust. I had 2.5" installed and was going to go with magnaflow but decided to go with flowmasters 40's or 50s and went with the 40's. My 350 has had some engine work done to it and has a pretty lopey cam and the car sounds nice at a idle. Even on a long 400 mile round trip it doesnt sound bad, but some time I wish it could be quite. Even driving or at a stop light I have no problem listening to the radio. Everybody I know really likes the sound of the car so I guess I'll keep it the 40's for a while. I havent heard the 50's but I'm told the flowmaster 50's have a low throaty sound even at high rpm.
Theres no reason you cant change back to a more quite muffler.
