What paint can I use for a guide coat on my fiberglass repair work that will be compatible with Ecklers Gel Coat. I would like to use some type of aerosol can paint.
Thanks in advance.
I have used any black spray paint--some just fog it on some use more. All you want is something to use as a contrast to see high/low spots to block to. Have used a coat of darker primer---you going to sand most off anyway--my 2 cents! don't get in a hurry is the big thing////
I use 99 cent a can black from the Dollar Store... you'll be sanding it all off anyway, so any sharply contrasting color works. If the gelcoat is too wavy to block all the guide off, simply spot sand it before you apply fill primer, Featherfill or whatever's next on the menu.
I have also used a powder product that I picked up at the paint store- it is black, it wipes on, and sands/washes off. I ended up liking black spray paint the best. You will end up sanding it off, anyway. Just "dust" it on, very lightly.
I recommend using black primer in a spray can. Hold it a good foot/foot and a half away from the surface and more or less 'fog' the surface. You only need a mist coverage so you can see contrast as others have pointed out. The primer dries faster than regular black paint, costs less, and, because it's sandable, doesn't gum up your paper like a glossy or semi-flat black paint will tend to. It's best if you can let it sit overnight.
In the past I would keep a quart of DuPont dark grey (basically black) primer around and spray a really thinned-out coat on a primered surface. But I've found that the black primer technique as outlined above works about as well and is a lot cheaper.
