Default Ignition Key Doesn't "Spring" back after engaging the starter!

Hi

My ignition key doesn't spring back after engaging the starter is this a "simple" ignition lock cylinder change? If so would you know the name of the tool required to get the spring back thats behind the steering wheel or is it necessary to remove that much to change the cylinder lock?

I'm pretty sure the spring is in the ignition switch mounted on top of the steering column near the firewall. The key cilinder just rotates a cam with moves a rod and then a slider in the switch.
Looks like this depending on the year :

That is correct the spring return out of the START position is built into the ignition switch. You will need to remove the steering column from the car or carefully drop the column down out of the instrument panel in order to reach the switch. (Difficult for the thief to hot wire; difficult to service.)

I say carefully drop the column because you should NEVER just remove the two vertical screws (H in the assembly drawing enclosed) and just let the column "hang" under the dash. You will need to detach the cable AC from the lever on the lower end of the column (out inside the engine compartment) and also remove the two nuts K that are located inside the driver compartment down by your feet.

You will then have access to the switch on top of the steering column jacket.

Wasn't expecting that much work!

Is is possible to lubricate the system without taking it apart? I can feel it trying to pull back.

thanks

If the switch is all it is, consider yourself lucky.
But test it first.
It could also be in the column with or without broken pieces.
This particular column had no broken pieces, but everything was worn and gummed up enough to cause the key not to return.
