I have just rebuilt my 76 and now my fuel gauge at rest sits just clockwise past the full end, then when the car is running it sits at the right level for the fuel, but as I slow down it rises up to the full end again. Any ideas what this could be?
My '74 is terrible about that....it's just the gas moving in the tank...
It's kinda funny because when I step hard on the gas it dips towards empty....ironic !
You need to do the initial test first so we can try to help.
Ign key to ON ,
remove tan wire from tank sender (what did the needle do ? )
now ground the tan wire to a solid ground ( what did the needle do ? )

Just to make things stranger, I have worked out that when I put my foot on the brake pedal it makes the fuel needle rise way way past F. This is not about the motion either, it does it when the car is stopped and when the engin is off!
What on earth is the relationship between the fuel needle and the brake pedal?
The wire is going to be connected at the sender on the tank, I think on your 76 it's on top of the tank , you should be able to go in through the gas lid , push the rubber aside and expose the wire.
(Petes 74 will be on the bottom , 78s and newer are for sure on top and I'm pretty sure 75-76 are on top also.)
post 6- sounds like you have grounding problem-sounds as if the tank is grounding through the rear light grounds. Turn one of your signals on and see if the tank responds to the flashing.
Check the tank ground lead , it will be next to the sender wire.
I have nailed this one! It turns out that when the panel shop replaced the antenna base for me when the rear bumper was off, they took off the earth strap and when they put the new one on they did not put the earth lead from the fuel tank sender back on!
All sorted now, thanks to your advice above. Thanks guys.
