I've been told that there can be compatibility issues with the headlight units while changing the front clip from an 80's to the correct '69.
I was always under the impression that the headlight units where compatible from 68 - 82 as sold from ecklers etc. but have since noticed that pretty much everything is the same besides the actual mechanical assembly .
What exactly is the difference? Can the be modified sightly to work?
Is it necessary to change the complete assembly if I change to the electric killer lights?
the headlight assemblies main differences are with the horseshoe support bracket that attaches the assembly to the header bar under the nose of the front clip.
as far as I understand they are broken down like this:
68 are unique
69-72
73-74
75 and up are the same
the 73-74 units can be made to work on the earlier model cars but must have two spacer blocks placed in the front arms of the bracket so it doesn't sit low in the surround.
The only real difference is the headlight support: 68-74 are the same. 75 up are different due to crash bumper changes. The 75 and later units will fit the older cars but require spacers under the front mounting tabs.
The only other change is for the early cars with headlight squirters and that applies only to the bezels.
If you have the stock flip up units in the 80 front end, they will fit the 69 fiberglass with spacers.
...let me see if I can find a pic of the pictures of those spacers...
The original GM service replacement headlight supports came with spacers which were square blocks about one inch square and 1/2" thick. A stack of washers of the equivalent height will work.
