Great engine stamp study for a judging school...to quiz students. Than tell the story. I have seen two stamps on a pad before but than did not have the advantage of viewing frame and tranny VIN derivatives. So, this is very unique and nice...thanks for sharing.

It shows that during production, workers did not waste time with grinding...just stamp another to fix and move on. John Hinckley may have some insights to offer as well but this group did an excellent job of triangulating the problem. He hangs out on the C2 forum.

Ya gotta love it!! He caught the mistake, made the change, and took the time to (at least) make an attempt to correct the tranny stamp.

Well,
I've heard back from some pretty knowledgeable people in the Corvette hobby. Normally the incorrect VIN would get XXX'd out or ground out and the correct one stamped somewhere else. There's at least a few other cars with THREE stamps before they got it right

Only thing missing is the word "oops!" carved into the stamp pad.

Simple operator error, as noted in the above posts. The Engineering-issued procedure for the assembly plants was to "X-out" the original stamp and re-stamp the correct number, but they didn't always bother with the "X-out" process. I've seen many like this over the years; an experienced judge wouldn't question it.

I recently purchsed a 1978 W72 4 speed Trans Am which was suppose to be numbers' matching. On checking the numbers, the production # of the car is 165163, but the # on the engine is 165193, the numbers on the transmission are correct. The first though that came to my mind was that the 6 or 9 got inverted somehow. I checked back with the guy I bought the car from, and he swears that the engine was never changed. All date codes are correct.

What are the changes!

It's not that I intend to sell the car, I'm building this car for me! It's just the prestige of having a matching #'s car, or one that's not!

Yea, though about that too, but how would you ever know, unless you found another motor with the same VIN ?

Anybody know how to do this ?
