4 to 5 speed shoestring conversion finished.
Just been finishing up the shifter relocation, the last peice of a puzzle for my low budget 5 speed conversion that I have been tinkering with on my 68. I went with a world class t5 from a late 80's camaro. Sold the hurst shifter it came with because it came up to high in the console, and sold the bellhousing and some hydraulic parts attached to it. Got a new clutch, had the driveshaft shortened, picked up a 35.00 mustang shifter from ebay, and also a set of plates to make the crossmember removable from Kevin here on the forum. In the end I am into the project for around 350.00 Re-worked the rear transmount, the exhaust hanger, and the shifter location to look stock. I think it came out real nice, no vibrations. So far so good, been driving it since the spring with the hurst shifter, it really spoiled me, but to look correct in the console the mustang sfifter worked better. 70mph in 5th is 1750 rpms with 3:70 gears. Heres a few pics. You ca see the crossmemer here, with the hurst.

rear mount. put trans straight, tilted mount to match.

Wow, look's like your labor and ingenuity really paid off, as have a friend who went with the Keisler kit and was in the thousand's. Like you, his car's a 3.73 axle and sure is nice on the highway with that o.d. He also has the 5 speed console shifter plate, and maybe availible seperately. Anyway, very nice work.
You'll probably be fine with the T5 mounted behind a BB, long as it's on street rubber which will usually spin before breaking anything. Also, are you sure about the 70 mph @ 1750 rpm cruising, as my experience with a .70 o.d tranny feeding 3.73 rear's is more like 2200.

Considering GM felt it was too weak to put behind a 225hp V8 Camaro/Firebird, it may/OR may not be short lived behind a Big Block..
That said, with it behind a mild BB and no powershifting, clutch dumps with sticky tires it may very well work without issues

From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
Not necessarily the wham bam from a 5000RPM launch that kills them, other parts will probably go first. From my experience with weaker trannies ( 2 Super T10's ) was extended torque like low RPM's in second gear for example and matting it to 5000RPM or so the case gets twisted / distorted and this causes everything to start to get out of line then you get your blowed up tranny
