Is the pulley bolted to the harmonic bal. or stamped in with a rubber bushing like some fords? I ask because last week when trying to time my car (77) I painted the timing line, and also put a dot of paint on the edge of the pulley. Now the painted dot on the pulley is almost 180 degrees from the painted line on the harmonic bal. What gives? I was planning on adjuting the distributor tomm. on TDC. Because last week I could not get the timing line any closer the an inch below the timing tab. I figured it was taken out at some point and replaced a tooth off.

It is bolted on and it sounds like the rubber on your Harmonic Bal. is finished the outside of the Harmonic Bal. is slipping thats why the paint and the dot don't line up.
So its possible that the timing is correct, and the harmonic bal. timing line is just slipping? I know it can't be the timing chain jumping, due to no back fires or pinging. The car actually runs alot better since i advanced the distributor last week. So I guess a new harmonic bal. is in the near future.
I just replaced my daughters on her mustang. Real easy. But I knew it was going because the engine vibrated so bad. The vette's motor isn't vibrating at all. Is this still possible? Can I get to it without taking the rad. out?

I must admit I have never done one in car on a corvette perhaps someone can chime in on this question but there sure seems like there is enough room to get it done.
Yup, you can pull the HB after removing the water pump - easy job. O'Reillys rent out a stout tool (puller) for the job. Mine was on a BB, not too sure if easier on a SB.
I don't believe the water pump has to come off for the balancer? I just finished taking the BB rad, fan clutch and belts off. What a bit-h to pull that rad. up.! Tomm. I'll go in from underneath with my gun to take the bal. off. Since I have the rad. out now. Do you think I should go ahead and change the cam? It's a L-48 and I had planned in the future to change the cam and heads. Wasn't thinking about doing it so soon. But since the front is off, Do you think I can change the cam and hold off on the heads for now? Or have to do both at the same time?
You could be right re: not removing the pump but I found it so much easier without it in the way. I was also doing intake too, so perhaps you can get away without removing it.
