Is the ignition key supposed to also fit the door locks on a 1971? I have one key for my car and it fits the doors and ignition. This seems odd to me. On my 1976, I have two keys.
I think its supposed to be a single key for both the doors and the ignition (square head), and another for the rear glovebox and the spare tire locker (oval head), someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Spare tire locker? Is that the key hole on on the rear panel that I have seen in some pictures? I don't have a keyhole on that panel - I wonder if this means that my rear panel was replaced at some point?
Sounds like your refering to the key lock for the alarm. Some years was in rear panel, some on drivers side fender by fender emblem like on my '77, and some it was in with the door lock. Those are all the places I am aware of anyhow. and the spare tire lock is actually on the spare tire bracket, mine has a rod hanging down that goes threw the spare tire bracket and a lock that locks onto rod to hold it all in place. Anyone correct me if I am wrong but I hope this helps to clarify.
Also if it has been painted before there is a chance someone shaved the alarm lock like I was thinking about doing to mine till I devised a new purpose for it

Spare tire lock
Alarm switch ("lock"). Guess will only be there if alarm option (UA6) was ordered.
Gm for many years used a rectangular head key for ignition and an oval headed key for door and trunk locks. Mine did not have the oval head so dare not lock it but have new locksets to put in. I assume the oval headed key did both door locks and alarm but have not actually tried rectangular headed key on the alarm system yet. Owned it 8 weeks and have been doing punchlist things like carb rebuild on the Quadrajet M4mC four barrel which will be done tomorrow morning and get back. I let a good mechanic do it rather than let my learning curve screw it up this first time. I keep the t tops out so don't drive it in bad weather so locking isn't an issue but I would like to lock it eventually.
Thanks for the replies, guys. I crawled under there and discovered I do not have an alarm (no key hole in the rear panel) and also do not have a lock on my tire carrier release bolt. I guess this is OK since I do not have the small oval key, either.
Not too sure if my key is original for my alarm ('70) but it has an octagonal head and is small in size like a padlock key. The square headed key is ignition and door locks, the oval head key is spare tire carrier lock and glovebox (IIRC).
Wow....tomorrow when I get my 76 back I will immediately try the ignition key in the door locks which I haven't tried thinking that the oval key was door lock and it went missing one owner ago. If that works it will be terrific. I have an alarm and I can buy a new lockset with the tabs and stuff on it with new key for that but it isn't octagonal in shape as far as I can see. I sure hope you are right about the rect. key being the door key as well as ignition. Will save me a huge pain in the *** not having to get into those doors.
in 76 my actual alarm is in the driver rear quarter tucked up underneath next to the gas tank....double check to see if there is a small horn and other stuff up there. If there is, find the key spot for it. My 76 has it on the driver's side front fender just above the side vent.

Things changed in '74. Up to '73 the ignition and door key were the same, the square head key. The oval key was for the storage compartment and alarm. In '74 they changed to the square head was for the ignition only and the oval them worked everything else including the doors.
