You can use an ohm meter between the console and a known good ground (usually the shifter is grounded). You can also check to see if the light in the shifter is lit up. You can also push the lighter in and see if it works.
Just went out and hooked the battery back up without the gauge bezel connected. Pushed the cigarette lighter in and it is working. Guess I'll try hooking the gauges back up and see what it does. Hoping that I didn't have the temp gauge connection pushed all the way on.
So a new twist to this problem and hopefuly it will give enough insight to those of you who know electrical to tell me what my problem is. I just went out and connected the gauge bezel and turned the key on and took a reading with the ohm meter. Touching the black lead to the parking brake fram and the red lead to the bezel, I got a reading of 1.2 just as it looks in my previous posts. I then touched the shifter console plate and the needle shot all the way over to the right past the 0. I touched it to the ashtray and got the same thing. When the battery is not connected, it read 1.2 ohms. Does this mean I have a short?
The cigarette lighter is working and the lights are on in the heater/ac controls but I don't see the light in the shift indicator. Someone please help as I am about to pull what's left of my hair out.

When you PMd and said the orange wire was hooked to the side of the heater control and the black was hooked to the lighter that meant the lighter was working in reverse.
Sounds like you were running 12v through your ohm meter also.
Haven't worked on the issue anymore lately. Hope to get back on it later on in the week. Roger, doesn't look like the connector on the orange wire will fit the spade on the lighter. As I showed you in the pics in the PM, it appears that the connector on the orange wire is made to fit into another plastic connector. Should I cut the plastic connector off and put a metal one in its place? Thanks for the help everyone.

I'll go back and look at your pics you sent but if the orange should be a female inside plastic and the lighter should have a male spade.

You are correct on that but the area between the male spade and the post on the lighter doesn't appear to be wide enough to allow the plastic connector to fit.
I am putting the interior of my 75 back together and am using a new center gauge bezel but the original gauges. When I hooked all the connectors back up(fuel, clock, oil press., etc) one of the studs at the bottom of the bezel touch the shifter console and sparks shot out. Is this normal? I did not see a ground on the back of the gauges anywhere. Needless to say, the battery is now disconnected and will be until I have the bezel in place.
Just seems odd to me that the speedo/tach gauges have a ground wire that attaches to the metal housing but the bezel gauges don't. A previous owner has been in there hooking up a radio so some grounds might be missing. If any of you have any pics of what the back side of the bezel should look like please post and as always, a big THANKS for your help.
is this a trick you cant see the red power wire all skinned up in the pic??? when the bezel went in that wire hit the ground, tape that wire up..... Merry Christmas
Well after much procrastination I went out and hooked the shifter plate back up and left the orange wire off that goes to the cigar lighter and the plate is not conducting anymore. The problem solved. Thanks for your help and hope you all have a good new year.
