Default difference in heater boxes for C3s

What are the differences between an early heater core box w/ac (68-76) and a late heater core and box w/ac (77-82)? I am referring to the fiberglass box and the heater core for units with ac.

-How to tell apart
-Interchangeability
-How well each works
-issues or flaws
-Ect.

Why am I asking Basically my box and core are trashed and it would be cheaper to replace with used. For reference the car is a 72 but the box and core might be from a later model I need more info to make a decision on how to proceed. Thanks in advance

Define "trashed." The box is fiberglass and can be repaired using fiberglass repair techniques.

The heater core is a matter of AC or non-AC; evaporators might have changed over the years.

My advice would be to repair/rebuild your box and get replacement 72 evaporator and heater cores if you need them.

I found out that the core is a late c3 core from 78-82. I need to know if the box is different from the earlier models or if it just the retainer plate that need to be swapped.

by trashed I mean the stud and bolt hole opposite it are gone they where ripped off and there are no pieces. the third hole is ripped off but I found that in five small pieces and the fourth is still attached but it was over tightened and is bent inward with a very long crack going around the corner. there's some other damage like someone took a crow bar to it.

can I fix it Yes will it take time yes. if I were to judge how much of my free time verses how much I get paid at work I would say its easier to buy one and it would certainly be stronger than the repairs I would do.
