Default Electrical problems

Hi,

I am new to this forum and need some assistance.

I have a 1971 corvette, basic 350, ps, pb

Here is the problem, When I put the key into the ignition cylinder and in auxiliary, everything seems to be working and lights up. When I turn the key to start the motor all the electrical turns off, the starter doesn't kick over and the power wont come back on at all for a period of time. (Haven't timed it but at least over 30 minutes)

I checked the battery already and it is good.

If anyone has had a similar incident or any suggestions what could be wrong I would be most grateful as I am not mechanically inclined.

Thanks, Steven

I may be mistaken but I believe that when the key is turned to the start position( the spot where the starter should engage) power to everything else is interrupted.
The only thing I can think of is that you may have a problem with a bad connection at the battery or the starter. Either positive or negitive.
Possibly a bad solonoid also. But what is confusing is that you can get the problem to repeat itself without touching anything after 30mins.
Could also be a problem with the ign. sw.
I would check the conections at the battery and also the starter. Especially the starter ground. Could be a bad starter also but start with the obvious stuff first.
See what happens then and report back.
Good Luck!

Number one check the ground from battery to frame.................number 2 the ignition switch might be bad, a rod operates it from the keyed switch, it is located near the base of the steering column. Check your ground first, might be bad and when a load is put on it it craps out. Remove bolt from frame end of ground wire and make sure all pieces involved (bolt, ground end, frame) are clean. GOOD LUCK..............

Not really a starter ground, a ground strap goes from frame to front support bracket of the starter--OK, could possibly call this a starter ground, but it's more an engine ground and the starter is grounded when bolted to engine HAHAHAHAHAHA

How did you check the battery? Sorry had to ask. A battery on it's way out this could give you this condition.

Thanks for the replys.

It did turn out to be something so simple I am ashamed to admit it.
Was a simple ground that had come loose.

Thanks again and I am sure I will be posting soon enough with another silly problem. I am waiting for the shop/repair manual to arrive so hopefully I wont have so many questions.
