Default Alternator Identification
Where do I find the numbers on an alternator ? trying to determine the date. Do you have to remove it from the car to find it ?

Numbers are stamped into the housing. There are two alternators for 1971, 1100544 is 61 amp for AC cars and 1100543 is 42 amp for non-AC cars. The date code is a 3-digit code. First digit the year, second the month, third the day - 1A7 is 1/7/1971.

Looked all over the housing and can't find any numbers . It's a delco Remy and the only stamping is the word "ROYAL" ?

It may be a replacement part you are looking at. Try a search on eBay for 1100544 and you can see what the stamp looks like and its location. I don't have a photo handy.

If the alternator is indexed correctly, the numbers should be on the top rear of the case...in the area of the bolt that tightens the belt.

@ that location it has the word "ROYAL" ... must be a replacement

Alt on my 71 w/ac...this is the location with the numbers/letters you should be looking for if you are going to replace it with an original type.
