I recently replaced the drivers side mirror with an after market type. The stem seems quite loose and I'm afraid to tork on the well nuts for fear of stripping them inside the door skin. The mirror had new holes drilled for it. I'd like to put a passenger side mirror as well but don't want to double my problem.
Any advice on how to make the mirror more rigid??
Thanks
I'm not sure what year you have, but on my 72 the passenger mirror has well nuts. You cant strip those. On my drivers side I used a little larger screws and it tightened it up for me.

My 69's mirror stem was loose and I replaced the well nuts - it tightened up fine. If the actual mirror flops when driving (common issue) there are several threads in troubleshooting on how to repair it)

Question about after market type? I thin the appropriate replacement for one of these mirrors is a made-in-the-USA replacement. These mirrors are made from the original casting toolings. I think the real mirrors are made by Trim Line, headquartered in Ohio. They probably cost a whopping $20 more than the cheap Chinese stuff. Another advantage of a real made-in the-US factory duplicate mirror is that they fit (!!! they fit). I'd recommend buying a real replacement mirror. I personally have bought the real replacements many times for my 68 and 70. Hard to keep a shiny looking like new mirror on these cars. .......Sorry to not address your installation problem directly, but I just want to communicate to readers that using the factory duplicate originals minimizes problems.

You didn't state your year, but from your comment about wanting to put on a passenger side mirror it sounds like you have the chrome mirrors and not sport mirrors.
There are two places where you can have play on the chrome mirrors. One is where the bracket mounts to the body. The other is where the mirror mounts to the bracket. The fix is obviously different. Where is the play coming from?

Those just need a little T.L.C. the screws that go into the bottom of the mirror base will take quite a bit of torque I put two new After market on my 75 I got the driver side nice and tight and the Passanger side is coming around. The small bolt that holds the mirror onto the shaft sometimes need a little metal shaved off of the outside so they screw tighter.
Thanks for all the suggestions, I checked it today and it seems as if the door skin is not very rigid as you wigle the mirror stem. I'll try to tighten the well nuts more and see if that clears it up.
Thanks again, and a Merry Christmas to all!!

Now that you guys said the well nuts do not strip...I cranked down on them and that seems to have done the trick...much more stable.
Thanks for the input!
