I just talked to the very nice people at Allied Vaughn today. (They truly are very nice, by the way). I sent the VINs for my 78 SA and my 1977 right before christmas, by way of their website, and got a call back today to confirm my order.
I mentioned to the service rap that I had previously (two years ago) tried to trace the invoice for my 77 but had gotten nowhere with either Allied Vaughn or GM Canada, each saying they had no record of the car and suggesting that I should try the other. Today, the Allied Vaugn rep said that she could tell me the build date of the car (3/25/1977) and that it had an export number. She noted that she had no other invoice information for my car and that this had not happened to her before......
This is my roundabout way of asking if anyone has an explanation for my situation. I was told by the PO that the original owner worked for GM at the tech center, so I am wondering if it was an evaluation or some other kind of demo vehicle.

Maybe the original owner was like the assembly line worker in Johnny Cash's song and took it home "One Piece At A Time. 
Sorry, couldn't resist. Sounds like a good mystery! Hope you figure it out. Is there anything slightly different about your car from other 77s that you have seen?
