My buddy Chris at the tire store just called me and said my new wheels are in (Boyd Coddington) but when he tried to mount them up he cant get the tire to on the rim right so he called Boyds and they told him he needs a run flat tire machine to mount them. He has been the tire business for years and has never heard of a run flat tire machine before. He just did a set of run flat tires (18's and 19"s) off a newer vette with no problems. Soo what is and where might I find a run flat tire mounting machine?? He is a Les Schwab dealer by the way.
I never heard of one either, but wish I had. A local shop did a tire repair on my wife's BMW (with run-flats) several years ago and put a pretty big gouge in the rim getting the tire on (or off) to repair a leak. If special equipment is necessary to install their tires, it seems like Boyd Coddington (and BMW) ought to let you know about shops that have it. I don't feel good about suggesting that a national chain store might have the latest equipment. I would think that a BMW dealership would also have the right equipment, beacause the newer 3 and 5(?) series don't come with a spare and are equipped with run-flats. Better to find what you need rather than risk damaging a rim.
My boyds are really old, but I had them mounted at a local tire shop a good 6 years back. There was no run flat machine, just the regular tire mounting machine. Now I get a buddy to do my stuff at BMW. One thing we discovered is some wheels like CCWs are best to mount the tire on backwards. I wonder if the boyds might be the same way. By backwards I mean the face of the wheel down on the machine vs the traditional up method.
you can use the regular tire machines but its a real pain, you need a second person to hold the tire drop center area and lots of lube. We got a new tire machine 2 years ago at our station in tequesta does is the "run flat" machine, makes changing tires a breeze, it even lifts the tire up to machine from the ground
