Default Starter wiring

I know this has been discussed before, but I need some help. Rewiring the starter on my 76 w/383 crate. I know where the big black battery wire goes on the starter, no problem. However i have four other wires that have to be put back on the starter. For what ever reason they all have terminal connectors which would go on the starter battery post.I have 1 red(i think-faded) ,1orange(i think - faded), 1 black which I think is a ground and goes to the back of the block and another one that looks black (purple?. Is ther some kind of test I can do with a volt/ammeter tester to determine what goes where?

The small black is grounded to a starter bolt or bell housing bolt. The purple goes to the "S" terminal. The big black, red and orange all go to the batt terminal of the starter.

Should the purple wire have 12 v whenthe ignition key is turned to start?

Yes, the purple should be hot when in the start position.

Thanks! Since both wires look black and have the same diameter connectors at the end of each wire I just wanted to make sure they were connected to the right place. Thanks again
