I have a 68 427/400 hp with the hydra-matic transmission. I had the car up on a lift today and was trying to ID the stamp code for the tranny. What appeared to be the tranny ID plate (located above the right gear corner of the oil pan) - looked like a small dog tag - had "250" on the top center. Below that "CL-68 1168". And then off to the right side (not on the plate) there appeared to be a part # 862368.
Is the '250' a build date? Is the 'C' a calendar month code? Does the L-68 represent the 427/400? And what would the '1168' represent? Should I have also looked on the driver's side of the tranny? Is there a VIN stamp anywhere on the transmission?

Thanks
TH400 transmission has the VIN on the opposite side of where you plate is.
Here is the dog tag off of my TH400 on my 71, passenger side.
On the driver side under my grease I found the VIN.
Close up detail showed the VIN matched my engine, A-Pillar, etc.
Thanks guys, that does help. I found the VIN stamp last night after searching the forums some more and then wedging myself under the car with a flashlight. I tried to take a photo today, but it waan't even close to being legible. If I put the car back on a lift...do you think I'll have better clearance and will be able to get a decent photo?
