Default 72 power windows

yeah another pw question...sorry
is it possible to pull apart to clean the contacts in the relay?
have tried to open it up but it looks like there is a fine wire attached to the outer case.
my windows work on an off, have cleaned the switches, thought i'd try the relay.

thanks

You should be able to remove the cover and file the points on this. The wire you might be seeing could be the red wire wound around the electromagnet.. If this is the case it's probably fried.

If the coil was fried it would not work at all, not be intermittent. If you can get the cover off (some are glued together) use a business card dipped in carb cleaner and slip it between the contacts, hold the contacts gently closed on the card and slide the card out, repeat as necessary. The leaves that the contact points are mounted are fragile, easy to bend, then your screwed.
Wouldn't be all that hard to source a relay that will work if an original isn't available, not pretty, but workable.

Sixfooter is right, I missed the part about working off and on!

Power window relay can be found here:

didnt manage to get the relay apart very far, as the fine coil wire appears to be spotted to the outer case for the neg side.

tried with a short jumper to short between the contacts on the switch connector, pass works, but just a faint click in 1 direction on drivers side.
(willcox- fyi - looked at the wiring diagram on your site, but my '72 switch wire colours are different to yours)
so i guess the relay is working fine, so my next problem is - the motor...

how do i remove the door opener, trim and *****, so i can get into the motor?
how easily does it come out?
not much info in the aim.
edit: window is in the down position

looks like all the current draw goes thru the switch, thus melting the internals.
i have 1 v old switch and 1 newer version, both melted.
is there anyway to overcome this? maybe by using the switches to control other relays to handle the current?
how many amps do the motors draw?
just thinking out loud..
