Default help with axle code

I have a 68 with the 427/400 turbo hydramatic. I should see an AY for the 2.73 ratio and the W for the Warren suffix. As you see the pics below, the date (9-15-67) is easy to see and makes sense as my car was an early 68. WHat do you think of the first part? It looks like the AY is somewhat jammed in with the W. But it also looks like a 7 in front of that. ?? If it were a 1 or 2, that would represent the shift...true? Any ideas?

...it looks like that "AY" is stamped on top of a few other characters like you have stated. Many times GM emplyees weren't so neat at doing this, then I've seen other stampings that looked like a machine did it.

....maybe he had too many drinks before his shift that day.

I think I can see an AY there.
