Default Driver's Side Window

Broke (shattered) my driver's side window - 1980 Corvette. With the snow we have here in CT not in a hurry to replace (soft-side portable garage collapsed on car due to snow/ice weight) but thought I would get replacement quotes on line. One - Binswager replies their vendors don't carry. Another - no reply. Satellite replies "special order - car is an exotic" (a 1980 Corvette?). Payless Auto Glass replacement quote - $658.81. The side glass is available from EcklersCorvette.com for $139.99 plus shipping. I know enough to not try and replace it myself - but almost $700 seems out-of-line. Any suggestions?

Not really a big deal to replace the side window. Should only be an hour maybe two for the whole job. Seems like knid of a high price they are charging.

Suggestions? Only drive it on sunny days with the tops off and the windows down. All kidding aside, buy the ecklers and find a local shop to install it.

Not in my drive way! I'd be that long just getting to it much less getting the old one out, swapping out the hardware, and getting the new one back in.

Based on my track record, I'll need another half day adjusting the new glass to seal on the weatherstripping.

I'll probably order from Ecklers and see if a local can do the install. I know it should not be too difficult - just disappoints me that anytime a vendor or garage hears "Corvette" the price doubles. Must think we're all idiots - right - right guys?

Although for me...it would be more like a 6 to 8 hr. job...replacing a side window and adjusting is fairly simple.

Where abouts in CT are you located? I know a couple of Corvette shops which do good work. You may get a good rate at one of them, being winter, a slow time. That's IF you don't want to or can't do the work yourself.

Give this a look.

http://www.windshieldstogo.com/

Enter your zip code and information about your vehicle. I ran a 1980 driver side glass for my zip code and came up with a price of $218 - installed. They claim to go to your house or work to change it. Might not work out, but worth a shot. Just something I heard about and have not tried them myself.

Not a bad job as long as it doesn't lead to an engine rebuild!

Here is the outcome:

Have been involved with Model A's early in life - brother has a '31 A Tudor - I currently have a 1980 Corvette - broken driver's side window. Ordered the replacement glass from Eckler's in Florida. Contacted several places to do the install for me. One shop - local family owned - said "no way." One National chain company said "no." One National chain company wanted $820.00 to do the install - and would not guarantee work. The glass cost me $149.00 plus shipping.
I was facing doing the install myself when I contacted the following:
VINTAGE GLASS U.S.A
328 SOUTH RIVER ROAD
TOLLAND, CONNECTICUT 06084
TODD MISIURA
860-872-0018
800-889-3826
VINGLASS@AOL.COM

Told Todd what I needed done, and he quoted $125.00+/- for the install. Brought the car and glass into him - and within the day the glass was installed - and the total was $160.00. One of the coolest guys I have met - works out of a barn/garage on his property - and seems to do a lot of Ford glass repair. Very knowledgeable guy - and is very honest in his dealings. It was a good feeling to have the work done ny someone who knows what he is doing and not a ripoff artist. I asked him if he does work through the mail and he said "all the time." UPS was making a delivery and pickup when I was there to pickup my car. You have a glass repair need - this is the guy I would contact.
