im new to fiberglass bodywork.does anyone know where to get a book or dvd of how to do corvette bodywork.i have a 75 with no dents no seriously it is very nice shape with a few scratches and im wanting to get it really straight.i have done steel cars and bondo before with no problems but a friend of mine sanded his down and made a real mess of it.i know theres different techniques and ways of doing things with fiberglass and i want to get it done right and only paint it once.im painting it with a black base coat and that should show any imperfectionsright away.
There is a section on this site entitled paint/body. There are folks there who do this for a living and are willing to help. The basic steps for refinishing a fiberglass body are the same as for a steel one... remove old finish, repair cracks, (dents ), damage, perfect the surface and repaint. The most important thing to remember about a 'glass body is when you sand, STOP when you see ANY raw glass as it is possible to f-it-up badly since fiberglass is softer than steel. If you remember that one fact it is unlikely you'll mess up too badly.
my friend i was telling you about was using an air file and i was watching and saw the fiberglass strands.he said ill just add more glass, needless to say i saw the car after he painted it and it looked like crap.i just want to go into this project knowing what im doing and what not to do.knowledge first then skill will follow.i weld everyday and still find myself going back to books, especially when someone brings me a part to weld and tells me how expensive the piece is,or they dont make magnesium parts like this anymore.
Sorry but your friend is an idiot. Do not use a DA or body file on these cars, the only place I could use a body file was part of the door that I had to repair which was in the straight section and the upper quarter panel seam.
Either strip this car with fiberglass safe stripper and wash very, very good, or just wetsand the whole thing by hand using several different types of the foam rubber blocks. These cars are all curves and easily screwed up. If its original paint it comes off pretty fast.
