7029204 CHEV 69 CAMARO, VETTE 396/427 AUTO mainjet #71 main rod #47
If you are looking for the correct #7029204 carb then you will be looking at a rebuilt. I found one for my L36 manual car (#7029215) that had an acceptable date code...the only problem was they wanted $1395 plus S & H for it. Your search results may vary. Just remember you are buying a rebuilt carb, so it will only be as good as the core they used and what they did to it.
Instead I found a brand new GM replacement carb (#17054696) still in the shrink wrap and box from what I believe was 1986. Cost $722 plus S & H. It was a late 70's issued SERVICE carburetor for 1971 big block applications, including the 1971 Corvette LS5. It is identical in both configuration and appearance to the correct carb for my car, but supposedly has some "emissions" built into it. I believe the correct carb should have 71 primary jets, 45 primary rods and AX secondary rods. I still need to find out what my replacement carb has and play around with it. I've already replaced the accelerator pump because of the age. Nothing performs like a brand new carb with no wear and tear. Nothing.
My "1968-1969 Corvette Technical Information and Judging Manual" indicates on page 43 that the correct carbs for 427/390hp cars are Quadrajets #7029204 for an automatic and #7029215 for a manual. It tells me that the part number on a Q-Jet will have the P/N stamped on the vertical boss on the driver's side of the main body. It also notes that some carbs have the full seven digit P/N stamped there and others have just the last five digits. In additon, just to make things easier, there may also be several alphanumeric characters stamped on the boss by the part numbers to indicate manufacturing plant. Date codes for the Q-Jets are stamped on the drivers side edge of the base plate near the rear. Rochester built Q-Jets will have a four numeral date code with the first three indicating the day of the year (001-365) and the last digit the year. A carb built on January 5, 1969 would show 0059. Carter manufactured Q-Jets will have a different date code in an MY configuration where M= month and Y= last digit of the year. The Carter month codes were A-M for January to December, so our example carb would be coded A9.
