Did these wheels have a band welded on the middle to make them wider from the factory? Just wondering. I got a set with the car and am not sure if they are a stock item? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi

68 rims also have a very specific coding stamped into them.

68 Corvette rally wheels are 15 x 7 from the factory. They are coded AG.

Post a pic of what you have.

As Gunther stated. 68 rims where a specific to this year only both the stamping (AG) and color (argentsilver) the stamping is on both sides of the stem. I can send you some info if you want. In the meantime, you need to find out when your car was produced/assembled. Your rims are stamped with a date code that should be within six months of your car production. Can you post a picture of your rims to check out. I have a 68 I restored.

I looked at mine and they appear to be about 9" inside the beads and have a FW and a date code 1-2 69 next to the valve hole. But thanks for the input. Not sure what these are from?

If you decide to buy a set of AG rim. I can send you a picture of what they should look like. Time to time you see them on eBay but you need to be careful at what you are looking at.

I have seen original 69 rims go from $150.00-$220.00 each. Hope this helps, I sure others will chime in.

I've never seen a rim from the factory on ANY car, that had any "bands" welded into them, to make them wider. As has been mentioned, the '68 rims were 7" wide, and the '69-82s were 8" wide (inside the beads).

If your rims show evidence of welding, and are 9" wide, inside the beads, I'd say that they were widened. Which side of the wheel was widened, the inside or the "street" side?

They look professionally done. Very even smooth welds and no appearance from the front other than there depth that this was done.

I would say that they were "doctored up" then. The Chevy rallys were commonly widened for drag racing use, since they were already 8" wide, and it would only take adding a small band, 1" or 2", to make them usable for most drag slicks...at least back in the 70s and 80s....

In fact, one of the "racing wheel" shops in my area back then, used to do them quite regularly.

FW code is early 70's 15x7" Monte Carlos and such. I believe the offset is a bit different than the 68 AG's as well
