Did the 68's use a hood insulator?
On the top of the radiator there's a steel edge that rubs the hood and its burnished it down to the resin.

Some did, others didn't. My reference states that it depends on such options as big or small block engine, trans type, A/C, copper or aluminum radiator, type of fan shroud, number of fan blades, surge tank or not, and when in the model year it was made. Some hoods had pins for the blanket, some were glued on.
For example, in the '69 model year, my reference has 23 different combinations just for 350 engines, 28 more for Mark IV's.
I believe Dr. Rebuild might have a useful list of available blankets and hood seals on his website.
