My speedo is a little inconsistent. Little wobbly til 20 mph. Nice and steady @ 30mph. And then it fluctuates back and forth about 5mph when I get over 50 mph. I replaced the speedo cable about 5 years ago - only 700 miles since - non cruise control car. These results are when I pulled the cable from the transmission and used a drill.
Does this sounds more like a speedo rebuild needed or a speedo cable/lube issue?
thanks
I took a "little" wd-40 and sprayed it into the back of the speedo where the cable goes into. Drove it for a couple of hundred miles and it straightened it out. Be careful if you try this so you don't get to much in it and lube the face of the speedo.
Had that problem with my first 69, jumpy needle, it seized and twisted the end off the cable. Had a new cable made with metal end, it broke the speedometer.
I bought a new cable - lubed it with white lithium grease - took the speedo out of the car so there were no cable bends - connected my drill - SAME results
I'm now looking for a good resource to rebuild a '79 speedo....
