Default 77 L82 engine removal

I was wondering if there are any special things I need to know before I start to pull my engine for a rebuild. I know that space is a problem. so any insight would be great!!

A lot of people remove a front wheel and put the engine hoist over the fender, if you're using an engine hoist that might be helpful.

I personally remove as much as possible from the engine and remove only the engine after removing the hood.

The cherry picker I rented was too short to come in over the nose. My only choice was to come from the side.

The only advantage I could see was that small block only had to clear the fender while it was hanging in the air. It's kinda spooky having all that iron dangling over fiberglass.

I had to think about using the engine hoist from the side instead of the front of the car. But then I thought about how much further out the nose of the Corvette is compared to most cars. If the hoist does not have enough depth to it there may be some issues.

you know how is the time to take the radiator out and look for rust in that area and repair then you have lots of room take the hood off and its a breeze.

I don't even remove the radiator anymore. I leave the hood on and it comes out over the fender. What is the difference if it dangles over the fender or the front. I always remove the trans first then remove as much as possible. I can have mine out in about 2 hours but it has zippers on it now after so many times in and out. Nothing special about a Corvette just take your time and make sure everything is disconnected.

I agree with Roger, When I pulled my L-81 it was a piece of cake, only needed the hoist for about 20 min.... Good Luck Tim

this is your opportunity to clean up the engine compartment and fix the radiator core support in the easiset fashion. if you have not looked closely at the radiator core support you should....it may be badly rusted

when the engine is out make sure the header bolts do not bottom out....the headers go in easy enough after the engine is in you just have to find the sweet spot...i think i recall one goes in from the top and one goes in from the bottom.....you just have to get the car up high to swing it in place.

better stabilization by getting the "hook" squarely over the engine instead of having it in front of the engine. from the side it lifts up, from the front it pulls forward and up. it all depends on the boom length on the hoist.

that and the size of your work area.....my garage was not long enough for the boom to be long enough to do it all from the front
