There relatively easy to tune.....good gas is a must anf the totals can be 36-38 with most distributors rated at 24 degrees; so start off at 12 initial which will give you a total of 36 and the idle set at 850-900....No advance with a L88.......nice motor......

I have some experience with L88 cam ( and now zl1)
12 deg initial not enough. needs 18 . idle 1000 rpm
total 36-38 all in not higher than 2500 rpm

18 initial? Does it start whith that much?
Souldnt the total timing reach 36-38 later, when the cam starts to "run" (above 4000 rpm) ?

On my 468 i had a locked dizzy, with 38 initial/total started no trouble. My new 355 has 20 initial. Starts great.

Then using stock settings with a different/unknown advance curve makes no sense.

with less than 18 it doesn't idle ( this with the L88 cam)
Now I use the comp cam Zl1 nostalgia cam and it needs more than 18 initial and 38 all in at 1700 rpm ( dyno tuned ) idle is 1200 rpm.
Msd pro billet with lighest springs and 1700 rpm stop bushing. due to light springs, advance at idle is much more than 18. otherwise it doesn't want to idle
btw my former l88 cam was much easier at idle-advance tuning than the nostalgia ZL1
this is the link to my engine build thread. possibly of some help to you
