On our last long trip, storage of luggage, bags was a problem. ie; not enough room. I am concidering removing the spare tire and ulilizing the carrier for storing tool bag, tire seal/inflater, and some luggage. How well sealed is the carrier? The trip is another 1,500 mile run to Florida. Any thoughts? Al
That's a pretty good idea. Why didn't I think of doing it? Might have to give it a try sometime. Would be neat if you could work up a quick-release system for letting the carrier down easier.
I carry the T-tops on the luggage rack using the brackets for them. That frees up "all" the space behind the seats.. And I could strap something between the rear window and luggage rack if needed.. I too want to use the carrier for storage.. as soon as I get a carrier !!! ..
Put a piece of foam pipe insulation around the top of the bottom section, where it contacts the plastic upper cover. Glue or velcro in a piece of black vinyl on the inside of the plastic top where the Tire would be exposed at the back, trimmed just long enough to overlap the bottom lip of the tub. Throw in a piece of carpet and your tools, cover, dirty clothes are high and dry.
Amazingly we have the original spare tire, which still holds air, but is now removed, never used, just as many spares have been. Al
When I was preping my 69 for NCRS judging I found an original Goodyear bias ply white letter tire in the spare compartment. It had been mildly used and was mounted backwards on the ralley wheel. Back in the day the spare was considered part of the normal tire rotation, with the best one staying in the "trunk" when a new set of tires was purchased. Apparently a PO had gone with the blackwall "high performance" look and reversed the tires on the rims. I had a hard time getting a local tire shop to swap it right side out. Most were concerned with the potential of a burst tire or tearing the bead. Once reversed, the tire and white letters cleaned up beautifully.
I like your idea, We are going to a clothing optional resort for the week. How much clothes does she need anyway. lol
My fiancee and I took a tour of the Rockies - 1500 or so miles -- in her 96 convertible. One bag for her; one for me; a four cup Mr. Coffee coffeemaker in its box, plus coffee fixin's all went in the back. When needed, we stopped by the laudramat and washed clothes.
in the car, just carry what you will be using on the drive, then ship your suit cases ahead to where you will be staying...airlines might do it for you....and then while there, you can still shop, and have that stuff sent back also
