Default Big earth quake!

We have just had another big shake down here ( christchurch, New Zealand), most of the CBD destroyed, 200 dead, we have only just got water and power back on after 10 days. ( not good corvette conditions)
Our street looks more like a war zone than a surban street, 150,000 tonnes of liquification as messed up the city.
We were luck, out house only has minor structural damage, scratch on the vette door from the air compressor.
I not really involved in the local corvette club, save for recieving e mails, but the generosity of near by corvette owners has been great, offers of free accommdation ect, for thoses needing a break from the carnage.
Impressive and good to see good people are still around when other have a time of need

Hi Ritchiev8
Hope things work out for you, were you attending the Corvette Nationals that were supposed to be on the 26th - 27th Feb and were postponed?
We were not attending, but I know several who were on the way, and went to Americarna at Lower Hutt instead.
I see that 10,000 properties need demolition, some will not ever be rebuilt, Government will buy the land back and turn them into parks, I guess.
Your city will recover, and the 70,000 displace persons will return, and it will be better than ever, look at Napier, it was devastated in 1931 to a similar degree.
Rod.

Yes it will all get sorted, in time it will bring $$ into the local economy, for now its a PITA!
Yes was thinking of comming along, car is kind of stuck at home till the road gets sorted now
We were lucky, as we have just moved back to Christchurch, we have been renting a house, so only damage to some of our property.
Most that we know escaped injury, which is a blessing !!
Sadly many were not so lucky.
We had just bought a business, so have all staff working from home, luckly many of our customers are from out of the area, so still $$ comming in
I had just put my hand up for a 427 BB engine, so will have to see if thats still in the budget.......

Our house is damaged. We're out east in Burwood. I was on the top of our 7 floor building about to voice some radio commercials when it hit. Not great! Fortunately all my family are safe and well. The jury is out on the house. The only damage to my vette was the drivers side dash pad had something fall on it and wrecked it. Anyone got one they want to sell? A/C prefered.
Cheers

What I've seen from recent coverage looks terrible, but I'm sure nothing seen from afar does it justice. Makes me worry a little more about the New Madrid fault everytime I hear about a big one anywhere in the world. Anyway, hope the worst is over and you all get through this OK.

It does look bad on TV. It was a partcularly violent quake given the 6.3 magnitude. They're saying it's the worst one ever to hit a city anywhere in the world. Our very strict building code saved us. What did the damage was the peak ground acceleration. Up to 2g vertically, and 1g horizontally. The 1g horizontal PGA is the same as tipping a building on it's side. And people were thrown up in the air with the near 2g's. Coming down the damaged stairs of our building into what appeared to be a sea mist was weird. Turns out it was all the dust from the smashed buildings. There are some shots taken from the hills looking down on to the city when the quake hit showing the massive dust cloud over the CBD. So now I have to do my radio show from a campervan studio at the local racetrack!
BTW, if anyone gives me a really good deal on a new drivers dash pad, I'll send you a jar of genuine liquifaction from the Christchurch earthquake free!
Cheers

I hope your safe. The liquifaction looks like it was close to your house to do some structural damage. I hope everything is ok.

Some silt came under the bottom plate into the lounge, soaking the carpet. Plus the back door was open and it all gushed in there as well. Not to mention the rear garage door of the house. Dad was putting the lights back together on his 39 Buick coupe when it hit. He thought a sewer pipe had split when the liquifaction came up just as the shaking stoped! Anyway, it's all academic now, since the house is a writeoff. The concrete pad is cracked, and the house is leaning to the rear, plus the frame is all out of square. The govt will most likely buy out all the liquifaction affected suburbs and it will all return to wetlands. That's what they're saying.
Cheers

Grant- I am glad to hear you and yours are ok! I cannot imagine that quake. I know you have heard it before, but stuff can be replaced. People cannot. I have heard stories of the students lost that were visiting there, and as a father, that is sickening. I wish you all the best, and let's get that yellow Corvette back together ASAP!

Thanks for that! Getting closer all the time to getting back into the Vette. Dug out more silt today. Had a shower in my own shower for the first time since the 22nd!!! Low pressure, but what the hell!
It was very sad to see the loss of life given no-one died in the 7.1 in September last year. I worked part time in the CTV building that collapsed and killed over 100 people voicing a real estate show. Many good people died.
The Christchurch Corvette club's show and shine was supposed to be at the art gallery this month, but we're using it as our civil defence hq. At least I'll have a shot at being in it next year, all going well.
Finally, thanks to the awesome USAR team from the USA who did great things helping us in our worst natural disaster.
Cheers
