Default steering column part

I have seen this before on another thread but I cant find it now.
What is this part on my steering column. I isnt hooked up to anything. Should it be and since I am getting ready to loosen the steering column to replace the rag joint is it going to interfere?

Thanks

If i am not mistaken (and i could be) I'm pretty sure it is a reverse lock out and if hooked up properly you can not remove the ignition key unless the car is in reverse.

It is indeed the reverse lockout for a 4-speed trans. You should tie-wrap it or somehow immobilize it to prevent the lever from falling and preventing you from removing the ignition key. The better thing to do is to hook it up correctly.

Baxsom, under the arm is a bracket and under the bracket is a hole or slot in the firewall to slide the arm through if your going to pull the column.

The reason I ask....on my 73 automatic, that's the mechanism (and subsequent cable) that's used to make sure the transmission is in "park".

There are two nuts inside the car, down by your feet, that hold that plate in your picture to the front of dash panel. Remove those nuts and the plate can be pulled back into the engine compartment and removed from the panel. Then you should see a cut out in the dash panel that will allow the steering column lever to pass through.

There are two different cables. One for automatics and another for manual shifts. They both connect to their respective transmission shift levers.

From reading some of the posts, should there be a similar mechanism for a 4 speed trans. I have something similar held in place with a tie wrap from the previous owner, but its a 4 speed transmission.
