The VIN listed on my 1974 is only a 10 digit number beginning with DR. I have been searching and found nothing similar to this, can anyone offer insight? Very new to this car and trying to learn everything about it (you can read my story in the memorium thread)
It does end in MO, what does state issued mean compared to normal VINs
It means that the VIN was issued to the car by a state DMV, to replace the original one assigned to the car by GM. This is usually as a result of the car being stolen and recovered.
Where is the VIN tag attached to the car? It was originally riveted to the drivers side windshield pillar. There is a rectangular cut out in the interior trim molding where the tag should be, and you should be able to read the VIN there, through the windshield.
If your car does have a state issued VIN, it will hurt the value significantly, to most potential buyers.
It does end in MO, what does state issued mean compared to normal VINs
It means the DMV and law enforcement of that particular state found it necessary to replace the original VIN -- usually following theft recovery.
Does your replacement VIN have any of the GM VIN sequence in it?
GM VIN for 74 would have been 1Z37J4S4xxxxx for coupes; 1Z67J4S4xxxxx for convertibles. The J is the engine code for the L-48; it would be T for the L-82 or Z for the 454.
xxxxx would stand for the consecutive unit number.
