Ive done this before. Jack the car up on jack stands and get under it. You should be able to play around with the linkage and get it back into neutral.

I hate to say it, but it sounds like the tranny needs to come out and be rebuilt.
Did you have someone sit in the car and attempt to put it in reverse while you were under neath? Might help to see what's happening. Maybe something else is binding it up. Just a thought.
Good luck.

I'm pretty sure it needs to come out.. I had this thing rebuilt about 5 years ago. It shifts great.. like a knife through butter. Just wish a had a better understanding as to how these transmisions operate in reverse. I really dont want to get taken by the transmission shop.

I had a similar problem a couple years ago with a brand new Comp + Hurst shifter. Turned out to be the shifter.
I also had it stuck in reverse several times. Turned out to be the linkage. If I remember correctly, when in neutral the two forward levers are straight up and the reverse lever is pointed toward the rear of the car.
Loosen up the bolts & see if realigning them helps.
I this happen to my 71 years back. I had to pull the trans, but once the cover was removed it was an easy fix. Some how both reverse and 4th gear were engaged at the same time. I just popped 4th out of engagement and everything has been fine since.
